The honest Riga planner

Verified day-by-day itineraries, real prices in EUR, and an honest take on what is worth your time — and what is not.

Why Riga Trip

What makes this guide different

Five things we do that most Riga travel sites do not.

Honest itineraries with real day-by-day schedules

No vague "spend the morning in Old Town". Every itinerary lists times, walking distances and prices — so you can actually follow it.

Real prices in EUR (and USD/GBP)

Budget guides on Lonely Planet are years out of date. Ours are verified for 2025-2026: expect 35-50€/day on a budget, 80-120€ mid-range.

Riga and its regions — not just the Old Town

Sigulda, Cēsis, Rundāle, Kuldīga and Gauja National Park are structured as proper day-trips, not afterthoughts at the bottom of a listicle.

GetYourGuide tours integrated where they make sense

We only recommend tours we consider worth the money. Each itinerary flags the exact moment a guided option adds value — and when it does not.

Long-tail search done right

We answer the questions travellers actually type: "riga 3 day itinerary budget", "riga old town free walk honest review", "riga to sigulda by train". No fluff.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Riga

When is the best time to visit Riga?

June to August for long days (sunrise at 4:30, sunset at 22:30), beach at Jūrmala and outdoor festivals including Jāņi (Midsummer). May and September are sweet spots for lower prices and smaller crowds. December has the Christmas market. January-February is cold (-5 to -15°C) and cheap but dark.

How many days do you need in Riga?

2-3 days covers the Old Town, Art Nouveau district and Central Market comfortably. Add one day per day-trip (Sigulda, Jūrmala, Rundāle). A 5-day trip lets you go deeper into Soviet history, Jewish heritage and the Gauja valley.

Is Riga an expensive city?

No. Riga is 20-30% cheaper than Tallinn and roughly half the cost of Copenhagen or Stockholm. A meal in a local restaurant outside Old Town: 10-14€. A craft beer: 3-4€. Bolt taxi across the city centre: 5-8€. The main cost trap is the tourist-facing restaurants around Cathedral Square — we flag them.

Is Riga safe for tourists?

Generally yes. Latvia is an EU country with standard European safety. The risks are not violent crime but tourist traps: overpriced Old Town taxis, "free" walking tours that end with high-pressure tipping, and overpriced restaurants. Our Honest Riga hub covers all of these.

What are the best day trips from Riga?

Sigulda and Gauja National Park (1h by train, castles and hiking), Jūrmala beach (20 min by train), and Rundāle Palace (1.5h by bus). For a longer day: Cēsis medieval town (2h), or the Hill of Crosses and Rundale in one loop. Tallinn is a full-day or overnight trip (4h by bus).

Do I need a visa to visit Latvia?

Latvia is EU/Schengen. Citizens of the EU, EEA, Switzerland, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea do not need a visa. Most other nationalities can obtain a Schengen visa. Latvia uses the euro (EUR), so no currency exchange needed if you are coming from a eurozone country.
